Why is rooftop solar gaining momentum in the Philippines? ☀️🇵🇭

Rising electricity prices are putting energy costs at the forefront for Filipino consumers. With the country’s continued reliance on imported fuels and exposure to global energy and foreign exchange pressures, more consumers are recognizing rooftop solar as an increasingly affordable way to generate their own electricity, or sariling kuryente.

The momentum is also being reflected in Congress. PSSEA recently joined discussions with the House Committee on Energy, where lawmakers are considering eight bills aimed at making rooftop solar easier for ordinary households to adopt, including measures to simplify permitting and reduce regulatory barriers.

This builds on the President’s call for sariling kuryente in his State of the Nation Address, highlighting the need for policies that support direct-to-consumer power generation.

As PSSEA President Ping Mendoza shares in this video, the growing number of legislative proposals reflects a broader recognition across Congress of the opportunity to make rooftop solar more accessible to Filipino consumers.
